Culturing freshwater fishes and saltwater fishes in earthen or natural ponds are very familiar and common to all in agricultural technology. Successful use of this technology is feasible when the environment in and around the pond supports the healthy and fast growth of fishes. It is very important to retain the quality of the pond water for the profitable cultivation of fishes.
Though there are many ways of water treatment in commercial aquaculture programs. The water quality of different fish species would be different. Catfish farming pond and carp fish farming pond are not the same. Again Rohu fish farming pond’s water and Vietnam koi fish farming pond’s water quality are not the same. You should maintain proper water quality or parameters of pond construction for commercial fish farming.
The water in the pond may be spoiled in different ways. Pond water might not be ready to retain sufficient oxygen in a dissolved state. Due to the unavailability of oxygen fishes may suffocate and eventually die. Besides causing economic loss to the fish farmers it further deteriorates the environment by rotten fishes. For this reason, pond water should be treated to supply fish adequate oxygen and save them from intoxication and other microbial infections. This situation is often managed in the following ways. Here we will discuss here water treatment in fish pond rationally.
1. Lack Of Dissolved Oxygen In Water
This is often a standard problem in ponds, especially on rainy days. It may occur in the morning or in the evening or at any time in the day. It may happen is a cloudy day, sometime after rainfall. The visible indication of oxygen insufficiency is that the fishes come up at the surface of the water and gobble to draw oxygen from the air. Soon a number of the fishes die and begin floating. The following measures should be taken to avoid such deterioration of the pond environment.
Swimming In The Pond
Swimming in the pond is very common for water treatment in the fish pond. Usually, the water in the pond is quiet and without any current. Without a web or current of water, it from one area of the pond can scarcely be channelized to another area, and consequently, oxygen does not get dissolved in adequate quantity with pond water. Swimming in the pond or making web allows the water to be re-oxygenated. Young people can be encouraged to swim in the pond.
Pounding Pond Water With Bamboo

3. Acidity And Alkalinity (ph) Of Pond Water
Checking the pH level in water, acidity and alkalinity of pond water can be realized. It is determined by pH meter. The acceptable range of acidity or alkality of a fish pond is between 6.5 and 8.5.
The problem arises if the acidity or alkalininity becomes more or less than the acceptable range. For instance, if it’s below 6.5 fish gills rot, if it’s above 8, fishes get less hungry for food, become weak. As a result, they become easily susceptible to diseases.

Application Of Lime
If the water is too acidic, (pH level is 6.5 or below), it can be treated through application of 1 to 2 kg of lime per decimal.
Dipping Branches Of Tamarind
This technique may be practiced where the pond water is too alkaline, example where pH-8.0 or high. The branches should be kept intrinsically for 3-4 days.
4. Green Algal Layer At The Surface Of Pond Water
Water quality in a fish pond may be impacted when an excess greenish algal layer covers the surface of the water. The water of the pond turns deep green. This can hugely hamper the normal movement of fishes and they reach the surface for sufficient oxygen. Use of Copper Sulphate
